Making Tenses Easy in Afrikaans: Part 4 – Using “het” in the Present Tense

 

When do we use “het” when it is present tense

Die woord “het” kan ook soms gebruik word as dit teenwoordige tyd is. Die woord “het” beteken “have” in die teenwoordige tyd.

 

The word “het” can also be used in the present tense. In the present tense the word “het” means “have”.

 

Voorbeelde (example):

Ek het ’n hond.

Sy het ’n mooi huis.

 

As jy ’n sin met die woord “het” in die teenwoordige tyd na die verlede tyd verander, sit jy die woord “gehad” aan die einde van die sin.

 

If you change a sentence in the present tense with the word “het“ into the past tense, you put the word “gehad” at the end of the sentence.

 

Voorbeelde (example):

Ek het ’n hond gehad.

Sy het ’n mooi huis gehad.

 

Present Tense	Past Tense
Ek het ’n hond.	Ek het ’n hond gehad.
Sy het ’n mooi huis.	Sy het ’n mooi huis gehad.

 

How does the possessive form of the word “het” change in the future tense?

In die toekomstige tyd skuif die besitlike vorm van “het” na die einde van die sin en verander in “hê.”

 

In the future tense the word “het” moves to the end of the sentence and changes to “hê.”

 

Voorbeeld (example)

Present tense	Past tense	Future tense
Ek het ‘n oulike hond.	Ek het ’n oulike hond gehad.	Ek sal ’n oulike hond hê.
Sy het blink skoene.	Sy het blink skoene gehad.	Sy sal blink skoene hê

   

The use of the word “was” in the present tense.

Net soos baie afrikaanse woorde het die woord “was” meer as een betekenis. Die woord 'was' kan ook beteken “to clean.”

 

Just like many other words in Afrikaans the word “was” has more than meaning. The word “was” can also mean “to clean.”

 

Past tense	Present tense	Future tense
Ek het my kar gewas.	Ek was my kar.	Ek sal my kar was.
