Mastering Afrikaans Pronouns: Part 5 – Relative Pronouns
Betreklike voornaamwoord (the
relative pronoun)
Die betreklike voornaamwoord is ‘n voornaamwoord wat twee idees aan
mekaar koppel. Dit funksioneer soos ‘n voegwoord. Dit staan dikwils net agter
die naamwoord.
Die betreklike voornaamwoord staan dikwels direk ná die naamwoord waaroor
dit iets sê.
The relative pronoun is a pronoun that connects two ideas. It functions
like a conjunction and gives more information about a noun.
The relative pronoun often
appears directly after the noun it refers to.
In Afrikaans is
daar drie betreklike
voornaamwoorde: “wat,” “waar” en “wie.” Hierdie drie voornaamwoorde kan op
verskillende maniere gebruik word.
In Afrikaans, there are three of betreklike voornaamwoorde: “wat,” “waar” and “wie.” These three pronouns can be
used in different ways.
Examples
“Die kar wat daar staan, is myne.”
“Wat”
word gebruik vir dinge. Dit beteken dieselfde as die Engelse woord “that.”
“Wat” is used for things. It means
the same as the English word “that.”
“Die vrou wie se kar ek geleen het, is baie gaaf.”
“Wie” word gebruik vir
mense. Dit beteken dieselfde as die Engelse woord “who.”
“Wie” is used for people. In this
example, it means the same as the English word “who.”
“Die plek waar ons gebly het, was mooi.”
“Waar” word gebruik om
plek aan te dui. Dit beteken dieselfde as die Engelse woord
“where.”
“Waar” is used to indicate place. It means the same as the
English word “where.”
Wie se (whose)
When
the relative pronoun is
used with the word “se” it indicates
possession.
Die vrou wie se kos ek eet is baie oud.
Die man wie se kar gesteel is, is kwaad.
Wie (who) saam met ‘n voorsetsel (used with a preposition )
Partykeer word
die woord “wie”
saam met ‘n voorsetsel gebruik. As dit gebeur, kom die voorsetsel altyd voor die woord “wie.”
Some
times the word “wie” is used with a preposition. If this happens the preposition always comes before the word “wie.”
Die man van wie
ek jou vertel het, is baie oud
Die man op wie
ek staat maak, is baie oud.
Die man langs wie
ek bly, is baie oud.
Wat (That)
Ons gebruik gewoonlik net die woord “wie” wanneer daar ’n voorsetsel is of of wanneer daar besit aangedui word (dan gebruik ons "wie se"), maar daar is uitsonderings.
In Afrikaans, when we use the words “who / that / which”, we usually use the word “wat”, even when it refers to a person.
We usually only use the word “wie” when there is a preposition or when possession is indicated (then we use “wie se”)., but there are exceptions.Die man wat sing is baie oud.
Die hond wat blaf is stout.
Die kos wat ek eet is lekker.
